Oil markets are under scrutiny after a stunning spike in trading volume Wednesday morning. Contracts worth one point seven billion dollars changed hands in the single hour before an Axios report sent crude prices sharply lower. Experts are calling the timing suspicious, and the episode has traders asking hard questions about who knew what, and when.
That crude selloff didn't happen in isolation. Oil dropped seven percent on the session, and part of the pressure came from a geopolitical shift — reports that the United States and Iran are close to a deal to end hostilities. A retired vice admiral speaking to Forbes said the potential agreement would ease tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint critical to global energy supply. Less fear in that corridor means less premium baked into oil prices.
The dollar felt it too. The dollar index fell to a two and a half month low Wednesday, shedding nearly half a percent. Optimism around a US-Iran agreement drained safe-haven demand from the greenback, and the seven percent crude plunge further softened inflation expectations, giving traders one less reason to hold dollars defensively.
